Medical therapy of insulinoma remains unsatisfactory. Dangerously low levels of blood sugar (hypoglycemia) -due to excessive insulin levels- can be overcome by the immediate intravenous administration of glucose. If the patient recognizes the symptoms in time, he should take dextrose orally. However, there is no reliable medical prophylaxis for hypoglycemia in insulinoma patients. Both diazoxide and everolimus are drugs which can reduce the frequency of severe hypoglycemia.
